PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING THE FIRST ANNUAL ANTHROPOS MUSIC STUDENT/TEACHER CONCERT
On Sunday, May 21st at the Mercury (214 E. 6th St.), local Austin I.S.D. students from the Anthropos Music education program will perform live on stage with members of Big Game Hunter, Ta Mere, The Gypsies, The Brannen Temple Group, East Babylon Symphony, and many other local talents. Anthropos Music is a local non-profit music education organization which brings Austin professional musicians into public schools, providing a series of free lessons and workshops to economically disadvantaged students. All proceeds from the show go towards the continuation and expansion of this process. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Students and teachers will perform together from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Following this, (8:30 - 9:30) Austin's own big world band, The Gypsies, will share their blend of Persian, Indian, and Mediterranean music - strings, sitar, and loads of percussion led by vocalist Mohammed Firoozi. Fiddle/Guitar virtuoso Eric Hokkanen is to follow with his wide repertoire of gypsy swing/country blues/Latin originals from 10:00-11:00, joined by local bass phenomenon Luis Guerra. Rounding out the night will be Ta Mere offshoot Son y No Son, playing an educated mix of various Latin jams, from Caribbean to Afro-Peruvian to Brazilian to anything else you can't help but move to.
